How to give agency access to Facebook Business Manager

Last updated · roles checked against Meta help

The short answer

Agencies shouldn't be added as people in the client's Business Manager (now called business portfolio). Ask to be added as a partner: the client shares only the assets you need, each with partial access, using your business portfolio ID.

What to ask for

Ask for
Partner access to specific assets, not a seat in the client's business portfolio Partner access
Minimum safe access
Partner access to each needed asset with partial access. Never full access to the portfolio itself.
Client needs
Full access (formerly full control) of their business portfolio. Only people with full access see Partners.

Ask for Partner access to specific assets, not a seat in the client's business portfolio and nothing broader. The smallest role that does the job is easier for the client to approve, easier to audit later, and simpler to remove when the work ends. If the scope of work grows, ask again for the larger role rather than requesting it up front.

What the client clicks

Send these steps to the person who holds full access (formerly full control) of their business portfolio. only people with full access see partners. Tick them off as you go.

What breaks if the role is wrong

  • Too highAdding agency staff as people with full access lets them manage everything, including people and deleting the portfolio.
  • Wrong routeAdding people (Settings → People) is different from adding a partner; partners keep their own portfolio and team.
  • GotchaMeta renamed 'full control' to 'full access'. Some help pages and screens still say 'full control'; they mean the same level.
  • GotchaBusiness Manager is now called business portfolio; Meta's basic access was formerly the employee role.
  • GotchaA partner with full access to an asset can't share it with another business; only the owner can.
  • GotchaIf you can't see Partners, you don't have full access to the portfolio.
