How to give agency access to Shopify

Last updated · every role links to a page checked against official help

The short answer

Ask the client for their 4-digit collaborator request code, then send a collaborator request from your Shopify Dev Dashboard (Stores → Request store access) with only the permissions the work needs. The client approves it in Settings → Users. Collaborators can get any permission except the Administrator role, and they don't count toward the store's staff limit.

Which role to ask for, by task

One row per job. Ask for the role in the second column and nothing broader: the smallest role that does the job is easier for the client to approve, easier to audit, and simpler to remove when the work ends.

What the client needs before starting

Only someone with these rights can add the agency. If your contact doesn't have them, ask who does first.

  • ShopifyThe store owner (or staff who can manage users) in Shopify admin, plus the store's permanent myshopify.com URL and its 4-digit collaborator request code.

What the client clicks

The top-level clicks in Shopify. Each task page above has the exact role to pick at the last step.

  1. Client: in Shopify admin, go to Settings → Users (shown as Users or Users & permissions) → Security, click the 4-digit collaborator request code to copy it, and send it with the store's myshopify.com URL.
  2. Agency: in the Shopify Dev Dashboard, go to Stores → Request store access, enter the store's permanent myshopify.com URL and the 4-digit code, select only the permissions you need, and click Send request.
  3. Client: go to Settings → Users, use the Requests filter, open the request, review Roles, and click Accept request.
  4. If Shopify says 'The role name already exists', remove the auto-created role and assign existing roles instead, then accept.

What breaks if the role is wrong

  • Too low · Collaborator accountA missing permission blocks that area until the client edits your collaborator permissions.
  • Too high · Collaborator accountCollaborators can't be given the Administrator role; if the work truly needs it, the owner has to do that part.

Copy this access request

One message for every Shopify role above. Fill in the blanks and paste it into your email to the client. Nothing you type leaves this page.
