How to give agency access to GoDaddy

Last updated · roles checked against GoDaddy help

The short answer

Ask the client to invite you through GoDaddy Delegate Access at the Products & Domains level: you can manage their products and domains, with no purchase rights. The client opens Account Settings → Delegate Access, selects Invite to Access, enters your name and email, chooses the level and clicks Invite. You accept from the email GoDaddy sends within 48-72 hours.

What to ask for

Ask for
Delegate access at the Products & Domains level User access
Minimum safe access
Domains Only, if you only need specific domains: the client picks each one under My Domains.
Client needs
Sign-in to the GoDaddy account that holds the domains.

Ask for Delegate access at the Products & Domains level and nothing broader. The smallest role that does the job is easier for the client to approve, easier to audit later, and simpler to remove when the work ends. If the scope of work grows, ask again for the larger role rather than requesting it up front.

What breaks if the role is wrong

  • Too lowDomains Only covers only the specific domains the client picks under My Domains, and leaves out products.
  • Too highProducts, Domains, & Purchase also lets the delegate buy products with credit cards stored in the client's profile. Payment information stays hidden, but it's more than most agency work needs.
  • GotchaPending invitations expire if they aren't accepted within 48-72 hours. The client or an existing delegate can cancel one, and the client can send a new one.
  • GotchaGoDaddy emails the client when the agency accepts.
  • GotchaThe client can change a delegate's access level, or remove a delegate, at any time.
  • GotchaDomains Only needs the client to choose each domain under My Domains.
  • GotchaTo assign delegate access domain by domain, the client uses delegate folder permissions.
